Hi all

I've been out the mini game for 35 years so a lot has slipped my mind, sleaving wasn't the done thing then when there were plenty of blocks available at a good price unlike today where you need a small mortgage for one.

I possibly have the chance to buy a thick flange S block (without main caps) for my MK3 S project but from what I'm lead to believe it's already at 73.5mm bore (used I presume as I've not seen it yet)

My question is does anyone know what the maximum overbore size after 73.5mm (1380 if memory serves me correctly) it could be bored to have sleaves fitted to bring the size back down to standard or a little over for a +20 or +40 (1293 or 1310)

thanks

As far as I am aware MED are the only company supplying selves that may work on that size overbore. Ask them,  it it will also depend on wear.

then new caps and a line bore will be needed. That block better be free.

There are a couple of options, I can currently fit sleeves upto 75mm in diameter.

However currently maxed out and can’t take anymore on.

@nicklouse.....................HAHA free   and cooper s do not go together in the same sentence anymore do they? hmmmmm ok thanks, I'm sure it won't be cheap to have that done, the only main caps I can find are made by swiftune at 400 notes, then bolts at 200 notes so yes I need to work out if its worth doing.

@AC.................Ok that's good to know AC, would that not weaken the block? thought the very maximum was 74.7mm? That's ok as I'm in no rush anyway as my shell is still a rot box and unregistered, what would be a rough cost to sleave it? can you line bore the new caps too? also thinking of a 4 bolt center main cap while I'm at it, can you drill and tap that? final question where are you based?

You can actually go to 75.8mm but can’t get the liners easily in this country. I am currently closed to more business as I I am already rammed.

If AC can't help, speak to SMMC, based just outside Royal Leamington Spa.  The sorted out my S block.

If you decide to have a look at the block, look very carefully, there was one being punted about a few months ago which sounds similar, which was cracked below the centre bearing. Everything is fixable but with the MS block now available I suspect the cost difference could be negligible. I have seen some quite serious money being quoted for align boring the main caps, plus you still have a best part of 60 year old block to contend with.

Main caps boring from MED was 500 when I asked. Paid 1000 in Germany.

If it needs sleeves and main caps, then there’s a lot of parts and machining needed to get it to a useable block.

Then there’s all the other machining and checking needed of threads, corrosion etc. Hopefully it hasn’t had a big skim off the top deck as well

The brand new block from Minispares starts to look like a reasonable option

Thanks for the warning, looking at all the cost involved I'm beginning to think it's just not worth it once I've paid 600 notes for it and like you say I still have a 60 year old block, just looked at the MS block and holy cow it's 4k
