Is it not already switching a relay? I thought there was one on the aux fan circuit, or is that only the injection models?

...The wiring diagram I've got (not sure if it's only SPI, but don't see why it'd be any different) shows the radiator switch switching the coil of the motor relay to earth. A light green/white wire coming from terminal 85 on the fan relay. If that's right, you'd only need a single wire to the dash switch, that the switch earths.

The relay should be on the bulkhead to the left of the wiper motor - a bit of neater place to tap off for the switch.

Okay Ethel, these two on bulkhead, the right hand side one has a light green/white wire that indeed goes to 85 on that relay. Do I take a single wire from that green/white wire to a switch that is fixed in an earthed position, and when the switch is activated it earths pin 85? And this should start the fan?

You'd normally wire the fan through a relay, so the amperage going through the switch is small, something like this:-

Hi Floor manager, thanks for the diagram. Is the circled bit the thermal switch? If it is I think with this, and Ethel identifying the ground wire as the white/green that goes to 85 on the relay (it's black on your diagram), I think I've got it. Can I break into the ground (green and white) and take a single wire into the cab to the earthed switch? Cheers, Daz.

I reckon so, ignition will need to be on too of course. Looks like you can push a wire in to the relay holder & earth nearby to confirm.

Agree.  The part you've circled is the thermal switch.  If you ground out the wire on 85, then with the ignition on, the fan should work, so taking the wire from 85 through a switch, with the other terminal on the switch grounded, the fan should run.
