You won't need to split the engine off the Gearbox.

You can drop the Diff out (assuming this is a Rod Box) and select 1st and 4th from there.

Take the Flywheel off, Flywheel Housing off and your Drop Gears are right there.

Kinder to your "cogs" too

.... mind, you're also most of the way to swapping the actual final drive 'n all.

Thanks gents I think I'm going to pull the engine. I've been in a bit of a quandary Really. My 1132 has a 3.1fd and in 3rd at about 3k rpm it really flies. But in 1st I'm still hesitant at roundabouts at times.
I feel I'm slipping the clutch a lot more so I definitely need to change the FD Ratio, especially if I contemplate any targa rallies or hill climbs.
A 1275 would be easier but ive just built this engine.
I will lighten the flywheel and change the fd. If its still not very competitive on acceleration I'll get a 1275 and use the gear box and verto bits of the small bore as I used A+ and verto bits on it.

For this, the tallest I'd run would be a 3.44, though I'd be more inclined to fit a 3.67.

Thanks Spider,

I can actually get my hands on a new old stock 22g101 for around £20. Which would be 4.1 but for one that would be probably over kill and 2 you can't find a 22g99 pinion gear for love nore money haha

A 4.1 on 10's would be a good diff for hill limbs.

There must be a 3.44 kicking round somewhere, lots of Minis & Metties had 'em.

I run 4.1 in the Moke, but my rolling dia is 24" so I'm pulling around 16 - 17 mph per 1000 engine rpms in top gear - same as a 3.44 in a Mini on 10's - these have a rolling dia of 19".

Yes, the 22G99's are long gone now !!

Cheers gents.

Yes a 3.4 would make sense because I could always add 1.1 drops to push it up to 3.7.
I said to my wife I should just enjoy it for what it is. A fairly nippy little mini.
Her reply was..... yes but the hobby is tinkering... surely that's part of the fun.

Guess she's right haha

If you put a 3.44 in and 1.1 drops it will still be 3.44

Sorry I meant 1.09. That would be right wouldn't it?

I don’t think you’d want to go any further than 3.44 with an 1100 for normal street use

If you keep the rpm limited to 6000 and mainly drive in the 2000-5000 range, too short in diff ratio will make all the gears very close and you’d be constantly changing gears. The 1100 should have a big more torque than a 998 and should pull from lower rpm fine

1.1 or 1:1 ?

I read it as 1.1(:1) as we were quoting FDs without the " :1 " but happy to be corrected.

Thanks Timmy,

It definitely pulls very well low down from 2nd and has a heap of mid range grunt.
It's mainly 1st gear. Getting away at roundabouts and junctions. Perhaps I'm just comparing it to modern day standards
I should use a go pro and see what people think. It might just be me haha

Here's a few of my 1100 pulling away in 1st gear (1100+080, 3.44 diff, std ratio gears). I can find traction is more of an issue than bogging down

Mini K (1100) was factory fitted with a 3.67:1 FD.

Nice car to drive, nippy enough and still did a respectably highway speed.
