Fitting Mpi (Sportspack?) Oil Temp Gauge To Non-Mpi Car

Best Answer mini-mad-mark , 08 August 2025 - 08:07 PM

Thanks to everyone for the input,

The one I found online seems to work OK, I put it in boiling water (well it was about 90 degrees when I got it to the gauge set up and it read a bit above 80 degrees) not sure how linear it will be but it went down as the water cooled down. It was 1/8" NPT so I could put it straight ionto the sandwich plate

Somerford sells one with an adapter as well. I emailed them and this is the reply
“Sorry for the delay; we had to get an engineering company to measure it. It is M12 x 1.5”

I guess the sandwich plate could easily enough be tapped to M12 which in hindsight might have been the better option.

I am thinking that it probably used the same sender for all MPi if it is original.

Minispares should be able to give you the specification on the sender they now provide as well as the thread size.

Some sort of thread adapter should make it work as long as the sensor tip is in the oil.

I use a Smiths/Caerbont modern gauge as a replacement. It is from the Cobra line of gauges.

I had used a mechanical Smith gauge, but had a series of bad gauges. The US distributor suggest the electric/electronic Cobra gauge.

My problem is the reverse as I am using the MPi block, so we converted an OPRV cap and tapped it, then had to find a thread adapter for the newer sensor.

The owner is kind of stuck on using the MPi gauge.

I've found a sender online that looks like the resistance values might be in the right ball park (45 ohms at 105deg C and 15 ohms at 150deg C) although I realise it may not give 100% accurate readings

If you read above I had a cheap sender which I've since had a go at measuring the resistance values against the temperature as best I can

Not sure what the figures meant other than what I found that in boiling-ish water the gauge went virtually full scale, almost like direct to earth (which goes off the scale) so its not compatible with the figure for the gauge that I got from Smiths/Caerbont (It starts at about 1100 at room temp not 700)

So depending on which type of oil filter housing adapter you are using, you may be able to make it work. I know some of the inline engine people can use an adapter between the housing and block, but there is not enough room on transverse
