Hi all,

First post, as coming back to mini's after a long gap.

One reason is that I want to get my 21yr old daughter driving and interested. (3.5 yrs license, no claims etc)

But the insurance has been mad for a 1965, £6K value, 2000miles a year, garaged standard mini.

Classicline was £645, Footman James was £1013, Lancaster, said no. despite their website saying they could. Adrian flux says no to named driver, but can if they are owner, but will be expensive, so didnt bother..

Some of those prices are more than she is paying on a modern Aygo, it makes no sense

How are we going to encourage youngsters in to classics?

Any ideas?

I think it makes sense it would be more expensive than a newer car to be honest, the Aygo is much less likely to be terminal damage in a shunt, so less likely to need a hire car for one thing, but for the same reason, costs of repairs are much cheaper on a £300 plastic bumper than they are re-modelling the entire rear end of your car.  old cars are also more likely to go wrong causing potential for incidents on the road

not to be all doom and gloom about old cars or anything.. all of us take them on knowing the risks and downsides, obviously

that said I don't feel like £650 (presumably per year?) is that bad to be honest, for a 21 year old.  Even a grand

I support the idea of getting more young people into classic cars 100%.  I think mostly that just comes from their adult parents being enthusiastic about them though, so maybe the question is are we seeing a decline in adult parents being into classic cars overall (linked to the various reasons why parents will buy an SUV or larger car these days)

If anyone is interested.

I tried GoCompare, I didn’t realise they could do classic car quotes?

With declaring wide wheels and performance exhaust, got covered with full breakdown and legal for £335

Limited yes to 2000 miles a year and was through Grove and Dean, insured with Allianz. No black box

There were about 3-4 brokers all about the same price, so probably all getting it from Allianz.

Then the next was Adrian Flux at £1000

Insurance premiums are much more about potential costs of personal injury than vehicle damage, so a Mini is never going to compete with a modern car in that respect. Even third party has to cater for passengers in the car.

I just renewed my insurance it was almost $900 just over £600 and it was a long time ago when I was 21. We have no choice for insurance here in BC everything to do with motor vehicles is dealt through Insurance Corporation of BC or ICBC for short. They are the equivalent of the DVLA and an insurance monopoly all in 1. It is also a Crown Corporation which means it is Provincial Government owned and allows them to dip their sticky fingers into it and take money out of it. BC is 1 of the most expensive provinces for car insurance.

They do have a no claim bonus discount which goes down by 5% per year and takes 8 years to reach the maximum of 43% discount.

Your £335 for your daughter is a bargain.

@Landie, I have Canadian relatives and I’ve heard this about ICBC. However on the flip side, as far as I remember you do not have ridiculous annual car tax rates, I think you call it registration. Unlike in U.K. where we get shafted!

Yes you are correct we don't have car tax, unless you have bought a car new or used car then you pay 12% purchase tax when you first register it. It doesn't matter what you paid for the car ICBC determine the value of that car and charge you accordingly. You might pay $500 for an old banger but the book value of it is $1000 then you pay 12% tax on $1000 and not the actual $500 you paid for it, unless you get a valuation from someone recognized by ICBC but that will cost you money. We also don't have an MOT equivalent but that might be changing in the near future.
