Regarding drivers and passengers not reading the now often very thick car handbook (or online document info if paperless)......have you noticed how many cars now drive around at night with no rear lights on. This is due to the EU regulations for DRL's (Daytime Running Lights - front lights only) many drivers now think because the front of their car is lit up (along with the LED dash illumination) they have rear lights on. Most cars now have an auto lights setting which would put the main lights on at night without having to remember....but you have to be aware of the function to set it.

Short trip from Sheffield to Leeds this weekend, three cars in the failing daylight doing this very thing. One was oblivious to it even when flashed by other drivers. I think it would help if the dash didn't light up with the DRL's.

yup I had one last night. he was sat there waiting to be let through a gap, I blocked the gap and flashed him.  no response.  flashed again, no response, held it on a few seconds, still nothing

possibly he thought I was saying 'go through' but I had also blocked the gap so I guess that confused his obviously tiny brain

f.cks sake.. roll down window and shout LIGHTS! as I went by.  he's probably still oblivious

Yes, waste of time flashing lights, etc. now....that used to work because drivers then looked down at their unlit dash in total darkness and realised they had no lights on....but now with DRL's most modern cars dash/screens are lit by LED's even in daytime and seeing the front bright LED DRL's on, makes them think all their lights are on. (Many drivers are clearly unaware that DRL's on means the rear lights are off).

EU should have included rear lights in their DRL regs.....too late now as their new DRL daytime 'safety' lighting regs have actually made driving in the dark less safe than it was!

Update....
China bans hidden 'pop-out' car door handles popularised by Musk's Tesla as part of new safety standards.

"China has called time on hidden door handles on cars from next year as safety concerns mount regarding the pop-out features that were popularlised by Elon Musk's Tesla electric vehicle brand.
The handles, which are designed to be minimalist to both improve the aesthetic and aerodynamics of new cars, have come under significant criticism from drivers and road safety groups in recent years.
Motorists frequently complain that they freeze shut during winter and won't open. But more concerning is that they've been found to lose operation when involved in a crash, making it difficult for emergency services to reach passengers inside stricken vehicles.
The new rules could prompt car makers globally to rethink vehicle designs, having faced mounting pressure to reconsider concealed handles since they've become increasingly common after the arrival of Musk's first mass-market car, the Tesla Model S, in 2012.
Other brands including Audi, Jaguar Land Rover and Renault also use pop-out handles on some of their models.
With China increasing its power within the automotive sphere, analysts believe the new safety standard it has set could snowball across global markets.
The new rules, which were announced by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Monday, will take effect from 1 January 2027, and require door handles fitted to new models to have both interior and exterior mechanical releases."

Why is it that some cars, the rear lights ARE on with the DRLs and some not? - I've got an Audi (no I'm not an Audiot...) which is the former.

I think that's the requirement in the Nordic countries, that were also first with DRLs. I know my daily can reprogrammed to do the same. It would make sense for all manufacturers to just change some code settings to make their cars comply with any market they sell in to.
