My MPI engined Clubman Estate has been in regular use for many years and has had a few coolant changes in that time - usually 50/50 with de-ionised water. The original Rover plastic header tank has become very stained with what always appears as rust deposits. I decided to strip everything and flush through the whole system after using a proprietary system flushing product. I can't believe how much silt and rusty fluid came out of it all, despite always using anti-freeze with so-called 'inhibitors'.
The car doesn't overheat - even in high temperatures on a trip to Bavaria. Having more room in the Clubman engine bay, I have made brackets and fitted a brass header tank from a Land Rover, with a proper metal radiator cap to get rid of that awful plastic one.
Is there a known and trusted anti-freeze which doesn't cause these problems on engines with a mixture of cast iron and alloy components?

Prestone is fine. And green.

The story seems to be that they moved to OAT coolant during production due to corrosion issues with the alloy radiator.
I would guess few people are using the older types of coolant in an MPI now.
I have used Prestone (concentrate) since flushing the system with citric acid some years ago. The coolant is still bright green with no sign of degradation with iron or alloy corrosion. The coolant header tank is stained red from years of poor coolant.
