A MINI has been almost completely swallowed by a sinkhole in Cornwall.
Malcolm McKenzie, the car’s owner, was alerted on Saturday by a neighbour in the former mining town of Redruth, where holes have previously opened up above disused mineshafts.
He said: “The neighbour knocked on the door and asked if that was my Mini outside. I said yes, and she told me it was stuck in a hole.
“I went outside and expected to find a pothole under one of the wheels – and then saw the front end of the car about 4ft in the air.”
Redruth’s mining past means such collapses, while alarming, are not entirely unheard of.
Officials are still working out how to move the MINI, which is trapped behind Berrymans Bakery in the town, before it falls any deeper. There are fears that, if a recovery truck is used, it could also fall in...

MINI Cooper teetering on sinkhole for weeks in ‘Italian Job’ cliffhanger....
A MINI Cooper has remained teetering on the edge of a sinkhole for nearly three weeks as the council tries to find who owns the land.
Malcolm McKenzie claims he has been blocked from retrieving his car from its precarious position on the edge of a 10ft (3m) hole in Redruth, Cornwall.
Mr McKenzie said his insurance company had offered to recover the car for free, but claimed Cornwall council said they could not take the fence down until they received written permission from the landowner.
“It turns out it’s unregistered land, there is no registered keeper anywhere for it,” he said.
Mr McKenzie said the council had relented in the wake of the news coverage on Tuesday, saying it would arrange for the barriers to be lifted when he had a plan in place to recover the vehicle.
“I’m a classic Mini nut so I love the Italian Job,” he said, citing the final scene of Michael Caine’s 1969 heist film as he acknowledged the difficulty of the undertaking ahead.
“Ideally we would lift it, because dragging it on the jagged tarmac underneath would damage the car. But there are power lines ahead, so a crane might not be possible,” he said, adding: “it’s going to be an interesting one”.
