Srs Light Woes

Best Answer Ledlights , 02 January 2026 - 04:46 PM

Thanks for the replies. The SRS ECU had failed during the welding - I managed to purchase a replacement on eBay and now everything is as it should be.

I will be removing all ECUs from the car before any future welding… Go to the full post

I’ve been restoring my daughters 40 LE and after completing some welding (battery and ECU removed beforehand) and other repairs, I started the car to find the SRS light wouldn’t go out. I checked the pretensioners and both showed approx 0.2 ohms, and despite cleaning the contacts the light wouldn’t go out. The car has had some water ingress in the tub but the light wasn’t in before the repairs.

Does anyone have any information on how I might go about fault finding this please?

Thanks,

Steve

Car safety systems (SRS, airbag, ABS, traction control) tend to have latching fault conditions, once triggered they will be held until reset by a diagnostic unit. As such the fault may not clear if all is wired ok.

You may need to plug in to at least clear the fault. I believe James Portman’s RoverMEMS tool can talk to the SRS/airbag module though I have not used it for this (Rovermems.com). A specific OBD cable will be needed.

Thanks for the replies. I do you know if the browser version of Rover MEMS reads the SRS ECU? I have a Mac and noticed that there isn’t a native version for that, only for PC and Android.

I borrowed the neighbours laptop and can connect to the engine ECU but not the SRS ECU with the rover mems app. When I pull the SRS fuse the light dims and flickers, so I suspect the SRS ECU is fried from the welding work. I’d removed the main ECU and car battery before doing the work but forgot about the one under the back seat…

I know you can put a resistor into the circuit.  This only hides the problem not curing it.  the light will go out as it should so satisfying MOT needs.
