Hi

I have a 1993 spi mini that I bought 12 years ago.

Was running great then all of a sudden !!!

wouldn't start !!!

Anyway I have narowed the issue down to the ecu.

tried another ecu and its running for a few seconds then dies again.

I know it will need pairing etc but any ideas what I pair it with?

I have looked for an immobiliser but couldn't find one ?

The car docent have a fob to press just the old fashioned key.

Any ideas what could be up or do I need it pairing with something.

cheers

Paul

Are you absolutely sure it is the ECU and not the wiring to it? Check the connectors to the ECU are absolutely clean and tight (I pull mine tight with cable ties). I am not sure about the immobiliser on the SPI but on the MPI, the function can be disarmed by sending the ECU away.

Hi Thanks for the reply.

I tried another ECU and the engine fired up for a few seconds as its not paired.

the original ECU does nothing, wires seem ok had a look last night.

I have just dropped both ECUs off at a guy who repairs them so just waiting to hear how he's got on or found ?

will let you know when I get it back.

Thanks for the reply mate much appreciated.

cheers

Depending on how you get on....

The fuelling is via the MFU (relay box) so first thing to check is that the fuel pump relay actually is pulled in by the ECU.

As others have said wiring is usually the issue as the MEMS ECU is quite robust.

If you car does have a immobiliser it is located inside the car in the middle of the dash and the pairing is between the ECU and the immobiliser.

You can tell from the ECU part number if it has an immobiliser requirement (assuming original).

I would think you should have a fob unless somneone has disabled the immobiliser.

I have a 1994 carburettor Mayfair and it has the earlier 3AS immobiliser with fob but no ECU.

I thought that too but when its googled comes up with nothing?

the cars never had a key fob or anything just a standard key all manual locking etc.

Looks like an immobiliser but not sure docent say anything on it except what's on the label in the pic.

Doesn’t look like the 5As on our car. As above, a switch illumination board perhaps?

The picture above is not the factory immobilizer and looks like the switch illumination kit as said already. Is your MIni a Jap import as I believe they were never fitted with immobilizers. I don't think your problem is an immobilizer because if activated the immobilizer prevents any cranking or start. A '94 SPi would have the 3AS that is not paired to the ECU ( '95 AS5 is paired to ECU).  The coil could be faulty and has damaged the original ECU. It will start the engine cold and than heat up and cut out.

Thanks for your help everyone..

I never got it going again, the wiring was awful after inspection.

So I have bit the bullet, ripped all the wiring out, and converted to old school carb.

When it was SPI it was never right so hopefully it will run better when do the rewire.

problem is finding a wiring diagram?

I need a 1990-91 drawing as this was the last of the Rovers before the SPI came along.

Any ideas where I can find a drawing, tried all the usual sites but nothing?

Cheers Guys
