Kad Short Shift Owners - Issues Selecting Reverse Gear

Best Answer mpialan , 02 March 2026 - 05:15 PM

I have experienced similar problems with my KAD shifter on occasions. Have you ensured that the collar that you lift is screwed as far down the rod as it will go? If it is not screwed down fully, the travel of the collar is reduced prohibiting movement of the shifter into reverse. Go to the full post

My mini has enjoyed being parked up over the winter but he has had the occasional dry run, and today was one of those days.

A lovely run, good oil pressure and normal temperature and a check and inflation of the tyres, the sprint through the country lanes was great fun.

When I got back and tried to select reverse gear, the sleeve was all the way to the top and I couldn't select reverse.

A little manual manoeuvring and Marvin was back in the garage.  The sun was setting quickly so I planned to revisit the issue in the week, but the frustration got the better of me and I had a jiggle.

I did manage to get the sleeve to move up and down and eventually I was able to select reverse.

Something needs adjusting but what?

It's worked perfectly up until now but I will have a look - probably next weekend - and see if there is anything obvious.

Any tips and advice welcome.

FYI, it's this car: https://ukminis.co.u...oad-mini-marvin

A 1983 body shell with a noisy 1380cc temperamental, tuned engine.

My friend Al Vaudrey of Vaudrey's Classic did the work and he talks about the fitting in the video:

Thanks in advance.  Peter

Rod change?

The standard setup just has a tab on the steel base plate of the selector housing.  Lifting the stick allows it to clear the tab so it can turn the selector rod to where it engages the reverse bell crank in the gearbox. If your stick has the reverse collar it will do much the same by pulling the end  inside the stick. I've not had one, so can't say for sure but there's likely some sort of cable & a return spring at the bottom end. There are some vids on the KAD site. If you take it off it might just want some lube working up the stick to free it off. If the stick end seems to be retracting fine, it could be you're losing a roll pin out of the selector rod coupling under the car, or summet else that will interfere with the rod turning.

Is it a cable inside the stick that lifts the bottom of the stick or is it a rod ?

If it's a cable, it might need some adjustment. I've not seen these sticks so I'm not sure of their make up.

There's a bit of a bend so I'm presuming cable. It's not much of a bend so I guess it could be "roddish". It'd only have to lift itself & Peter said the collar did stick.

Thanks @Ethel and @Spider.

You've given me food for thought.

The 'lift' collar seemed to be stuck in the up position and I'm guessing something [rod? cable?] got stuck and couldn't lift the selector to allow it to 'lift' into the reverse selector gate.

Have a look at the videos on the KAD link and you can see how the lifter works: https://kentautodeve...nge-quick-shift

I did manage to jiggle it around and the lifter seem to click and move back into position.

I may get to try it out later as the weather is lovely here today but I think I have a temporary fix and an understanding of the issue.

Thank you.

This makes sense.

The jiggling around I mentioned involved twisting the collar which seemed to move.

I'll go and have a twist now and see what happens.

Thank you.

SORTED!  This was exactly the issue.  The collar is threaded and turned several times until it was in the previous position.

I can now select all gears including reverse by lifting the collar.

Thank you.  :-)
