I might be searching for the wrong term but can't find a replacement product for this sponge with rubber type (suspect contains asbestos) matting. If it's not made anymore, is there a decent alternative or do owners use sound deadening/foam before the trim?

It's recycled "chip" foam & pretty common for upholstery. Self adhesive sound deadening would be a better option, unless your obsessed with originality.

There is a similar type of stuff used as insulation in air conditioning systems so must be available.

Absolutely not, foam has comes on leaps and bounds since those days. Just wondered what other owners use.

As the interior of the car is stacked up in a pile I don't recall if there was a bit of finished trim to cover the rubber/foam, I think yes it's two section of card - Mini City with centre single speedo

If the foam/vinyl is going to be covered over something like this could be used http://https://www.d...pro-barrier-mlv

Or this looks quite useful https://www.deadenin...nd-stopper-lite

From the little I know about sound insulation, a layer stuck to the bulkhead & another stuck to the back of the dash cards to leave something of an air gap between them could be more effective than one thick layer. You'd likely need some extra strips to keep a gap - the demister vents can help.

An old friend of mine was running her mini with just a simple layer stuck to the bulkhead,.... anyway it went into a garage for an MOT, and when it came back out they'd mentioned they found the proper dashliner folded up in the boot by the spare wheel. They fitted it and WHAT a difference it made! just a bit of old carpet basically!

but as you say,.. that would've given the conditions you describe, two layers and a pocket of air inbetween. Seemed pretty effective.

You might be able to adapt this from Minispares.

BULKHEAD SOUNDPROOFING FIRE WALL MK3 ON

Fire retardent felt with correct cut outs for MK3 cars for the mini firewall just behind the carb and air cleaner full width of the panel:-

https://www.minispar...ire-wall-mk3-on

Hardura Felt is often used in classic car soundproofing:-

(The MCR 'CooperWorld' magazine this month has an article on using Hardura Felt for replacement bulkhead soundproofing on a Mini using cardboard templates or the old insulation as a guide for the various cut-outs, etc).

That first link is great, thanks for sharing that. I bought a Bulkhead liner for my City E, and it's a sort of thick black rubber, which is great,.. but the backing is like loose potato sack hessian,.. It made such a bloody mess of everything in the engine bay, even found some in the air filter,. absolutely horrible stuff,.. but that foam looks much nicer, very tidy!
