Again, thanks for the ideas.  I reckon - taking inspiration from room dividers - I could have panels folding on the roof, laying down, that open.  Forming a structure actually attached to the roofrack (<or equivalent), telescopic poles holding up.  And then covered with a waterproof cover with professional logo on it, keeping rain out and down the sides for wind break purposes. 

 

Might also be good for going camping with the boy!
