Hello to all,

I am new to this forum and find it really interesting.

I am hoping that somebody with far more knowledge than myself can help me. I have a 1964 850 Moke to restore. It was sent to South Africa as a knocked down kit and built there. It was imported three years a go and sold to me last year and as such I have no previous history. It has a valid V5 stating it is 848cc. As advised by a friend I have dismantled the main engine, head and gearbox with a view to restore or replace. And here is where I need some help as when cleaning the cylinder head I saw the casting number. I had previously, while surfing for parts and prices, found an excellent blog on the Minispares web site, by Keith Dodd, tabulating the history and differences of the A series heads over the years. It is very comprehensive and when I found my casting number of 12G295 it says it is from a 998 Mini Cooper or MG1100! I then thought I should look more closely at the engine, no.99H353EH108231, to find its  history. Again Keith Dodd has a blog relating to engine numbers and it implies that it is a mini 998. I am hoping that other members can help me or point me in the right direction to find out the definitive situation of this engine. I am assuming I will need the exact specification to get the correct internal parts. Thank you in advance with fingers crossed.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy and welcome to the forum !

Great to see another Moker here.

by the way, we do have a Moke section;-   https://www.theminif...-the-moke-shop/

Your particular Moke would have had an 850 engine fitted, though, with time and all manner of owners and no doubt, 100's of hands all over it over the years, it wouldn't really surprise me what has been swapped out over the years.

Breaking down your engine number 99H353EH;-

99     998cc
H       Transverse Engine (ie, East-West)

353   decodes to Yd + Rf + Te

E       Crankcase Ventilation (likely a PCV type)
H       Distributor for 'regular' grade fuel

The '353' code, decodes to;-

Yd     Mechanical Fuel Pump

Rf      Lucas C40 Dynamo
Te     Standard Ratio Gearbox

I'd say almost certainly this did come from a Mini, though someone has subsequently fitted that cylinder head, in fact, there's a reasonable chance the engine's had other work done to it at a guess.
