You should be able to get it to seal without, but if it's your final option I'd look for one that  fits the outside diameter of the shoulder. It's more likely to seat true &  get compressed.

I'll take it out and compare it to the new one I have, see if anything is amiss. I'll also stick the scope into the hole for a look. If I end up needing a seal, would it go as per the picture Ethel?

I think that'd be the most likely place to get a good seal. It can't be far off the size of a lot of domestic plumbing fittings so there must be all manner of O rings, rubber & fibre washers. A few twists of a pan scourer to clean it up & a smear of silicone ought to be enough though.

So to fix this I had the permatex thread sealant, Ethel's o ring suggestion or a spare brand new sensor. I could have chucked all three at it, and be done with the bugger, but I really wanted to know which one has succeeded. I bought a box of plumbing o rings about three years ago thinking they'll deffo come in eventually, so started there. As per the pic I chose the most suitable ring and gave it a smear of silicone gasket seal. Popped it in and after one heat cycle and a cool down it appears to have been a success.

When I looked into the hole the chamfered part of the bore was pitted and a bit rough. It definitely hasn't been refaced during the head work, not sure if it should have been, and I could imagine a bit of grime levelling out the uneven surface in the past was helping it seal.

Thanks Ethel. Daz.
