Evening all.

I'm doing my first major inspection on my 1984 Mk4, so have all four wheels off the ground. I noticed a while ago that there was a slight creak while steering, but as it felt absolutely fine I left it until now. With it off the ground, however, the creak is really making itself pronounced, though the steering input itself is entirely smooth and light. Does anybody have an idea what the problem could be, and could it just be something as simple as a lack of grease or the rubber boots moving?

I could here something if your clip but I couldn't put my finger on exactly what from that, thanks anyway.

I've heard creaks from Racks and also Ball Joints, though the latter usually only when loaded but not always.

I'd suggest disconnecting one tie rod end at a time from the steering arms and trying it each time to possibly help narrow it down.

If it is in the Rack, it's likely one of pinion bearings.

That's a good idea. Ball joints all need doing anyway, so I'll be playing about regardless. I'll disconnect the steering from the hubs, as you say, and report back if anything differs.

How well can you pinpoint the source? I might be influenced by your piccies, but I can't help but think about rubbing plastic trim.
