Afternoon all,

The latest in a long line of silly questions from myself is this:

I've bought a new rocker cover as my original is in horrible condition, but I've found that the new reproductions aren't very close to the originals at all. For starters, I've found that the filler hole is a different size, so it won't take an original filtered cap. The cap supplied with the new rocker cover does, of course, fit, but it is not filtered. It simply has a pin-size hole allowing air into the top of the engine to feed the breather system.

How much does the filter actually matter, or would you recommend sending back the new cover and finding a good used original that will take the original-style filtered filler cap?

Thanks.

Not much, in my opinion. It's an oil separator.

If you have the crankcase breathers connected up as they should be, most of he time, air enters via the oil filler cap, so for you, that unfiltered air. You'll also find it leaves an oil stain around the hole.  If you are driving on normal sealed roads, it might be OK, but I prefer to run a filtered cap or a sealed cap and get filtered air from elsewhere.
