Hi guys:

Please bear with me, I am not native in English and may not be using the correct words, particularly technical words....

I just bought a 1992 Mini and apparently, for some odd reason, the roof was changed for an older Mini's roof. Why? No idea.... I am hoping not because of a big body damage but perhaps because at some point it had a sunroof and somebody decided to remove it.... no idea why really.

How do I know? Because I can see from the outside a bit of the job on the poorly prepared paint job (I haven't scraped it yet) and because the interior lamp is of the older type,

Anyhow, somebody dowh here in Mexico (where we only have a few Minis), tells me that my roof is out of a Cooper as he says older Coopers used not only the channel at the end of the roof over the windshield and all around side windows and rear windscreen, but also an additional piece of metal, a sort of rib under the channel, again, all around the roof.

Can somebody tell me if this assumption of an older Cooper roof is correct or not, and if, by cutting or removing the rib and leaving the channel it would render it looking ok? I understand I would also need ot modify the roof's interior lamp area to make the newer correct type of lamp fit in there.

Can anybody shed some light?

Thanks,

Victor

All Mk1 and Mk2 Minis 1959 -1968 (whether a Cooper or not) have a different internal roof structure as the headlining was supported on two metal frames that slide into the channel all around the roof, leaving a smooth 'rib' of painted metal below the channel exposed for a neat finish.

All Mk3 to Mk7 Minis 1969 - 2000 (whether a Cooper or not) have a different internal roof structure which has flatter sheet metal each side (over the doors/rear side windows) which has holes in to insert the six support rods/stays, which hold up the later headlining, which covers up all the internal roof metalwork and so does not need or have the smooth exposed painted metal 'rib' of the earlier Mk1/Mk2 Mini roof.

If you can post photos of your roof on the forum it will help Forum members give more detailed advice on what would be the best or easiest way for you to correct the roof and confirm what may or may not be possible.
