Hello

I purchased an K&N filter 56-9320 for my HS4.

I started demouting the carb and old filter but i see there might not be enought space for the new cone filter.

Do i need a new intake with a bend upwards to mout the new filter?

Also there is some kind of spacer with a wire there.

I took everything off and found this.

Can enyone tell me what is this?

Also he wire was not connected to enything.

Also what do i do to plugg this? and also the breather on top of the valve cover?

Have you looked into putting a K+N into the standard air filter?

Keith Calver has done a lot of work here.

Good luck.

I have thought about it but i preffer the look of the cone filter and am interested in more intake sound.

It looks like a heating element. It would've been fitted for a cold environment. If it is disconnected and you have no issues, just remove it to make space. You will need shorter studs.

That big duct thing is to help in cold weather too. There is nothing to plug if you remove it.

The breather on the valve cover depends which cover is fitted. Photos required.

I recently purchased alot of parts, the filter, most of ignition, all suspention front and back, front disk brake kit, sylicon hoses, engine mounts, steadys for engine and transmition (as it was changed to rod change from remote shift), throtle and clutch cables, and many other things. so ill probably be asking alot of questions in the near future.

To fit the K&N cone air filter you obviously discard the black plastic filter box, hot/cold air flap valve and silver ducting pipe. You can also remove the metal bracket for the ducting from the exhaust manifold if you wish, or leave it on incase you ever revert back to the standard set-up. (People often do when they tire of the loud induction roar noise from cone filters!)

The standard SU Carb metal 'intake bend/elbow' for the standard filter would also be removed with a cone filter....but again retain it in case you ever want to change it back.

The breather pipe on top of the valve/rocker cover will need to be rerouted to another engine breather (or just out to atmosphere in the old days!).

I found a K&N element in the original air box with a few 1" holes drilled around the side of the air box made a nice induction growl on acceleration and not overly loud.

Now fitted to my Minor traveller

This is a nice but expensive alternative for classic Minis.

HMW Twintake - Performance Air Filter Box:-

Induction roar in a Mini is always louder because of the large central hole in the bulkhead, just behind the carb.

This blanking plate linked below also from HMW helps reduce induction roar from the cone type air filters, etc.

I have seen that people drill holes in the airbox to get more air inn.

Also the HMW twintake looks cool, but i allredy purchased the cone filter and just mounted it. I need to at least try it for a while.

My bulkhead looks different, as it has a big rectangular box thing. Can enyone confirm that its not standard? Someone modyfied this at some point right?

I had to keep the heater plate thingy as my studs were way too long. but there is enought clerance between the bulkhead and the filter as its mounted off centre, so it comes up higher than i thought.

Also i changed some ignition parts.

Here are some progress photos.
