Hi all

1990 RSP Cooper. 3 clock binnacle.

I know similar topics have been covered before (yes, I certainly used the search), but after changing the indicator relay under the dash (I had it changed years ago and it made the indicators flash much faster than before so I finally decided to buy a new one to see if they would slow down), the indicators didn’t operate, the ignition and oil warning lights wouldn’t come on, and the fuel gauge didn’t move either. Lights on the binnacle did come on, but after checking all fuses under the bonnet I reverted back to the original relay and the binnacle lights then decided to stop working and neither did the indicator lights. Indicators work externally, and all electrics in the car work fine. Have I fubared the binnacle?

To add, the relay turned up from MiniSpares in a box with a steering rack and the relay had taken a bit of a thump as one of the connections was bent.

I’m mechanically capable, but useless when it comes to electrical stuff.

Wiggle the connector for the "binnacle"

On the earlier clusters the connector could be put in upside down which means all the connections are in the wrong place. I don’t know if the 90’s connector is the same. I did that when I fitted a new loom to my 75 car took ages to find it.

There's a variety of pin-outs for flasher relays even with the same pin base pattern so, even though they'll plug in, they're not always interchangeable.

What a fool I am. The connector had fallen out. I changed the rack last week and in all the commotion I probably left the connector on the cusp of dropping off.

All clipped back in, new relay fitted and a nice indicator speed that now matches the hazard lights. Thanks 68+86auto.
