Hi,

 

My 1988 Austin Mayfair 998 Auto project was bought as a non runner. I've now had it running with an electronic fuel pump but want to reinstate to the original type. Electronic pump removed, I've set up a temp fuel tank in the engine bay and am running a hose direct from this tank into the inlet on the manual pump. Turning the engine over does not show any fuel coming from the outlet on the pump. I know that a 40 year old membrane is likely to perish so I have stripped the pump down, membrane fine, and i have pumped fuel through it manually, out of car so proved it functions. I've read that it needs to be fitted at the correct side of the cam lug but how can you tell as there is only one way it goes into the block. Any ideas??

Has it got the std cam in, can you feel a lobe if you put your finger in the hole? is the pump definitely the right one?

Yes, the spacer stuck to block so I never removed it. Its about 10mm thick.

Standard original cam & pump. i've tried feeling for lobe but think its a lot higher. I'll try feeling about again. Is there a chance it's not striking the lobe due to fitting position? Not a lot of room for error really as it sits where the bolts line up

The Pump Lever usually lines itself up and in it's off the pump lobe, the pump will be sitting at quite an angle, you'd really need to force the nuts on big time.

You'll likely fine the valves in the pump have dried out and gone hard. They are usually just molded rubber in the shape of a reed in the SU Pumps. Often putting them in very hot water for about 30 seconds brings them back to life, however, what you will find in short time is that the Ethanol these days in the fuel will very soon destroy all the rubber parts in the pump.
