now I see that, I think the knuckles are out 1 spline.  They are awkward but can be gotten too while the engine is in.

Both? As I remember the one that goes into the gearbox can be fit 1 spline left or right while the screw still goes through

Yes I removed them while the whole unit is in the car, also removed the fuel pump

It's only 1 that's out, the one that's on the shaft that goes in to the gearbox, not the one coming up through the diff cap.

With the gearbox in neutral the knuckles should be in a straight line when viewed from above and from behind.

Thanks! It was my concusion too as we want the same angular movement in all 4 gear from neutral.

This is the best I can achieve with the gear lever approx at the middle

For neutral you mean the postion between 1st and 2nd ?

I think I'm used to first gear being left and forward. Here it seems just forward needed  :proud:

Anyway now it is a little bit better, I will see what happens on a test drive tomorrow.

And the next source of joy is the fuel pump  :D  I've noticed that the bottom of the gasket soaked with oil....

The plastic spacer is flat, but not the pump housing  O_O

For reference Minispares can supply the Detent Spring for the remote type gearbox case fitted with a 'magic wand' type gearlever which can lose its effectiveness or even break.

Thanks I will check it, but how does it cause the hard shifting ?

The gearbox was completely stripped down, none of these springs were broken - but of course it could broke since then
