Hi

 

My 1983 Mayfair has started making the most awful rattle / crunching noise from the offside front.

It sounds like someone has put nuts in the hub cap - they haven't !

 

The noise is there even when I coast downhill in neutral with the engine switched off.

I can't see anything obvious underneath.

 

Any ideas please ?

Have you checked the backplates on the brake disk, the brackets break and they sound terrible when they rattle.
If you have a welder a quick tack will usually sort it although a lot of people remove them if it's your problem.

Better to be safe than sorry. 

Put it on a jack stand or two - and feel for bearing and ball joint play - take the castle nut off and ensure the CV washer hasnt cracked - allowing lots of bearing movement

( I would probably also pull he whole CV joint as they can feel fine but suffer hairline cracks : 

Check tie rod ends and steering - look for missing nuts and bush failure

Hi  - I've checked the wheel nuts and they are fine.

Jacking her up tomorrow and have a good investigate.

So I've taken off the wheel and brake drum.

As far as I can tell everything is in order and nothing obviously loose or broken.

 

I don't know where to look next. Possibly jack up the whole front of the car / wheels off and see if i can reproduce it !
