Hello all,

 

Last weekend I got my '75 rally car out for a 2-day autotest style event at a farm here in the states - think I'm still learning how to get the best out of the car vs my r53 but I've only done a handful of events in it so trying to be patient.  Realistically I suppose I won't be able to compete for top times in it, whether me personally or the car, but my times were respectable, imo.  I managed a 6th out of 22 in the 2wd run group - harder to compare to the awd crowd since the courses can change some, but that put me around 12th out of 39 cars overall.

 

Prior to the event I noticed my outer tie bar bushes were split, so replaced with the road/rally ones from MiniSpares.  They are now gone again after just 13 minutes of runs - is this just what I need to expect when really thrashing the car in the dirt?  Currently I do have poly on the backside - I know people say to use rubber there - does that just help for braking or would it help make the fronts last longer as well?

 

The other issue was the heat - it was 90f and by the end of the first day the car was *almost* overheating - I was thankful we only got 7 runs.  I had an '89 with an electric fan in the wheel well but can't imagine that would last long in gravel conditions - other options?  Maybe something like water wetter?  What about removing the headlight/bucket?

A lead backed front bumper and moustache gets a bit more weight on the front wheels.

What size are your wheels? They look huge!

There are washers on them - the bushings folded out around them...so possibly what was on there was too small. Will try larger diameter ones - thx!

The wheels are 13s - they were the only gravel tires I could get - 165/65-13. I just got some 12" Black Rockets, unfortunately they are taller. They do have a 145/70-12 which i might try next when my wallet recovers.

Interesting about adding weight to the front, never heard that before. I've been thinking about getting rid of the huge battery the PO put in it - but it's fairly neutral right now and I was wondering if that was done specifically to keep the back in check.

 Nope not what I said. There should be two on the front of each side. A cupped and a bigger flat. Looked in your workshop manual?

Yes, for the torque spec. I didn't look for what I didn't know may be missing.

Maybe that's one of the best part of asking a question...or maybe it's just to make someone else feel better about themselves.
