Update:

I ordered that vacuum pump brake device and it was invaluable.

I also ordered new flexi hoses and only needed to replace the rear ones as they were definitely 28 years old, the fronts it appears I replaced in 2014. Also the union below the radiator was seized, despite soaking in WD40, it would not move and I nearly rounder it off. I guess I need some crows feet spanners.

There was a blockage at the rear which the vacuum cleared.

So all appears to be working now and the speed bleeders make the bleeding so much easier over the original bleeders.

try some proper penetrating fluid nit WD40. The Screwfix penetrating fluid is pretty good having used it to dismantle a 60 year old Austin.

Good to hear you have retardation once again (other than steep upward hills). Just as a matter of curiosity, - were the flexible hoses the correct length in thread - maybe not so crucial on the rear - but on front (discs) i have had to throw in a copper washer to get suitable tightness without twisting - wondering if it was just my rarity.
