So I’m fairly new to classic minis and just bought a 1997 Austin mini with a 1275 engine , so when I bought it the guy said on light throttle it’s fine on full throttle it’s a bit boggy and also a leak on the mechanical fuel pump ,
So I drove it home about 10 miles and then replaced the fuel pump gasket

Now the car will start then tick over but when you go to drive it , it backfires and struggles to idol and cuts out
Any advice would be amazing

First rule of this type of situation is to revisit everything you touched.Tight? Correctly fitted? Parts missing,wrong parts,left something off,did the new bits exactly resemble the old bits,trapped anything,disturbed anything etc etc.Inspect carefully and assume nothing.Steve..

By the sounds of it, it's leaning out, though it could be ignition issues too.

If a fuel pump issue is suspected, connect a pressure gauge and watch the pressure while the issue occurs.

Does your car have a carburetor and distributor? Or does it have an electronic ECU to control the engine?

So my mini is distributor , I’ve now replaced the mechanical pump so no leaks , cleaned the plugs check the oil pot and topped it up just she ticks over but holds back and misfires still , now I’ve put e10 in it and just realised it should be e5 fuel would that course the holding back on acceleration

Doing that today I’m going to check and am I right in saying it’s advanced 30 degrees on a 1275

If you don’t have a timing gun, start off with the distributor set to around 7 degrees advance at tdc. That’s the start point. You need a timing gun to check the advance as the revs increase.

What does it do with the choke out when revving it? Mixture checking...
