I have a problem with this 1991 SPI mini, It was not used for a number years, found the pump was really rested and the fuel level sensor, both have been changed and the tank really well cleaned out.

The fuel pump works for a few seconds and stops, this should be normal, turn key to crank, and the engine turns over, but there is no squirt from the injector.

 

If I remove the yellow injector  cap and connect my multi meter to the + and - and crank the engine I don't get any power registered,  

 

The crank sensor appears to be new, I think this could be the problem?  Is there any other way to get the car to run.

 

If I dribble some petrol into the inlet it will run, but quite difficult to keep a steady even flow, so does this prove the crank sensor is working as it should?

 

Would I see any errors if I connect up to the diagnostic plug with my computer?

 

I see lots of info on the Forum, have I missed something basic perhaps?

 

Really any help would be much appreciated please.

One of the injector wires has power and the other is earthed by the ECU,pulsing it according to demand.There would be no voltage to measure across the plug.Steve..

A multimeter connected like that won't show the injector signal as sonscar said. If you use the multimeter on the positive side and then to the engine ground you should get the battery voltage. That confirms supply to the injector but doesn't say if the ECU is triggering it.

A noid light or oscilloscope can be used to see the injector pulses.

 

 

It is unlikely that the ECU will report anything useful.

Yes you are right, I have now done as requested, with a separate earth, it is showing a value, but difficult to read, but I did a resistance and have 1.5 ohms, I think this is probably to high a value, could anybody advise what sort of value in resistance should I be getting for a good working SPI injector please.

Whatever you do, please be VERY careful with the injector. It is no longer available. It is very likely that you won't be able to find a replacement.
