Hi All,

 

I recently had a knocking from the front suspension, which I found to be a loose bolt. I tightened it, and the knocking has gone, but I am not happy with the bolt length, as it doesn't come all the way through the nut. I decided to buy new bolts, which I fitted today, and they're the same. My question is, have I got the wrong shocks on the car? it's the same on both sides, of that car.

 

Any help would be much appreciated

You seem to have a bump stop kit of some type and the spacer to clear it is causing your problem.Normally the spacer is not needed.Steve..

Without the spacer the shock would hit the bump stop bracket. Do I need a different bump stop? 

I thought it looked like the rubber is sticking out of the shock too far, but I don't know if that's normal. 

 

Could you send a pic of one that is correct please?

Unless your car was/is a hydro car, somebody has fitted a hydro competition bump stop kit, then cut it down for some strange reason, if running this set up you either need longer bolts or the hydro conversion pins, but those Koni dampers look quite fat, so even the conversion pins might come up short, so best go for longer bolts, as a stop gap change the nuts to normal type with a lock washer if it's your daily car.

OK, so I'll look to replace the weird bump stop for a standard one and see about a longer bolt. Where would be best to get a longer bolt? I assume it's not a standard length as the ones I have fitted are standard.

 

The car used to be a hill climb car apparently, so maybe that's why it has a strange set up. I just want it to be standard and safe.

You could use any non specific mini bolt and nut as long as its the same diameter.

The bolt appears short because of the Competition Bump Stop Bracket.

Before removing the Bump Stop to make the bolt long enough, I'll add that these are what I run with and compared to stock Bump Stops, these are night and day, and for a few reasons.

You just need to buy 2 new bolts 1/2" longer, not hard to come by - 3/8" UNF, Grade 8 x 5" long will do the trick.

The bolt will be "longer" by twice the thickness of the bump stop bracket. That should be enough, but it looks like  something is holding the washer under the nut farther off the rubber bush than it should.

As mentioned. Longer bolt but you also need bigger washers.

You're going to need a bumpstop of some type, depending on what year car you have, it may be easier just to fit full size ones of the type you have fitted. They were originally MGB rear axle bumpstops which are freely available via Fleebay. Dry cars had the bumpstops fitted to the subframe above the top arm, the earlier ones had 2 fixings which bolted up from inside the subframe which are a pig to fit, later dry cars were single fixing from the outside and are a breeze to fit.
