Counterfactual – what if BMC had built the Mini 2 in the early 1970s?
"Few cars have lived as long and shone as brightly as the original Mini.
But what if, instead of endlessly refining Issigonis’s 1959 original, BMC – and later British Leyland – had taken the leap and built a true second-generation version?"

Counterfactual – Mini 3: the Metro-based successor that might have been...
"Few cars have proved as difficult to replace as the original Mini, and that is shown in the sheer number of failed attempts along the way.
British Leyland’s ADO88 project began with precisely that intention, only to grow into the larger Austin Metro. But what if BL had continued developing a smaller, Metro-related car as the Mini’s true successor?"

Looking at Philippe Bouton’s image renderings, which as others have said in the comments, looks like a cross between a Charade, a Fiesta and a Mk3 Micra....I'm just glad these 'AROnline imagined' Mini 2 & 3 never happened and that the original Mini lasted in production with few changes as long as it did!

There was a supposed proposed mini 2 shown in miniworld magazine at some point. (I have the mag but cannot find just now). It was around the time that it was first mooted that bmw were imterested. The proposed model looked different to all those shown and the bmw mini.

What would be the point in a cut down Metro?

Isn't the "Ka class" only possible because the "Fiesta class" is at least halfway to what used to be the Escort class in size?

Likewise, the more recent VW Polo models were 'upsized' over the years, finally becoming a similar size to some of the earlier Mk's of the VW Golf (which was in the class size above).

I guess this then made space for the VW Lupo/UP to slot in below the upsized Polo for the "Ka class".

I'd have loved to see a factory Mini shorty in the Smart car sector, would likely have been ahead of its time though.
