I mean this thing I've circled in red. My car is fine, but I happened to be underneath it the other day and noticed you could rock that thing around a bit. I wondered if it had rubber bushings which had gone the way of all rubber bushings, but apparently there are only supposed to be just a couple of washers. The actual nut and bolt are tight on my car, but the whole thing has a fair bit of slop in it. Is it supposed to be like that?

There is normally a Rubber Bush that's in the Diff Cap that it bolts through, the only washer is the spring washer under the nut.

Take a bit of care when fitting these, the casting on the back of the diff cap is thin and you can break it. I have an install tool that works in a threaded rod to carefully pull it in.

Thanks! It looks like it's this part. Maybe I should order another one. It does have rubber in it and that probably has degraded.

Move the gear lever, the steady rod shouldn't move when you do.

I bought one of those and could not workout how to get the old one out so left it in as I did not want to break anything.

As the engine was out of the car I thought I would replace it to be on the safe side.

I got a new one (from the MG Owner's Club, who now do Mini parts). But when I took the old one off I found the rubber had completely disintegrated, as expected, but that the outer part of the bush was stuck in the gearbox housing. Tried a few taps with a screwdriver but it didn't want to move easily. Thought about making something the exact right size on my mini-lathe to go in on a threaded rod or something to push it out (mindful of Spider's advice to be careful not to crack the gearbox). But then had the idea just to try a bit of rubber strip. Had some of this left over from another project. It's about 1.6mm or maybe 2mm thick. Cut to the right size it fit perfectly: the inner cylinder was a firm squeeze by hand to go in, and then when I did the bolt it up it was all nice and steady and not wobbly.

 

Went for a drive and the gear changing feels lovely now. One of those things you get so used to over the years you don't notice it's got a bit loose (if you only drive one Mini).
