Fanbelt Slipping Under Alternator Load

Best Answer Cooperman , 04 August 2026 - 12:57 PM

Just tighten the belt. It should not slip even with everything switched on, including headlights, spotlights, heater blower, rear lights, heated rear screen (and front screen if fitted), fuel pump, ignition system and dash lights. So tighten it and test it.
If it slips and is tight, then there is a problem with the water pump or alternator bearings binding. Go to the full post

If i turn my lights / fan on with a warm engine i'm getting some slip from the belt, can i just tighten this or is it likely to need replacing? Or is this potentially an alternator issue. Currently getting round this by turning my lights off as i pull away but obviously that's bloody stupid at night.

TIA

It is either worn or just lose. Tighten it. If that fixes it job done.

Visual inspection required. It could be loose, the belt could be worn or the pulley could be worn. Also make sure the alternator pulley is in fact the correct profile as there were minis and other vehicles which were fitted with wider 13mm belts.

don't over tighten it you will damage the water pump bearings, when correct there should be 13mm of deflection midway between the crank and alternator pulleys. If less than this it is too tight check for oil contamination or wear on the belt (shiny appearance) which it may well have if it has been slipping too long
