My low mileage 1999 1.3 mpi has been off the road for two years simply because I’ve not been able to get it past emissions tests at MOT. The lenience they used to offer is no more, so I’m mustering info and energy to try and resolve it and thought I’d ask advice here.

The tester says it’s running really rich, and it does smell like it is. It’s been serviced, with a new air filter fitted.

The car has a factory ECU but aftermarket stainless exhaust currently with no CAT fitted so the first thing I’m planning after curing the rich is to add a magnaflow sports Cat at the bottom of the Y before the gear shift mech….going to be tight to fit but got the smallest I can find. Should help the test but not sure if it will cure the rich issue itself?

I already changed every sensor (water temp, air mass, lamda, so ruled those out I think… but have not tested fuel pressure in the rail as yet, not sure how yo do that effectively as I still have factory fuel and return lines without a t—off to connect a gauge.

I have bought a Sykes picavant tester so can now properly monitor stats. Any advice on diagnosis with that gratefully received.

I remounted the exhaust manifold a couple of years back, in a bid to cure the issue….it’s good and tight but I haven’t rested for leaks, is there. A good way to do I that? I’ve checked the rest of the exhaust is not blowing.

Any other advice to help cure the rich ruining would be great, I’m advised I need to get that right, and the exhaust gases correct before wrecking the new cat converter.

It runs and drives great, but as I said it does smell a bit rich!
