Hi all,

I have two Minis in Bulgaria, a 1994 1275 which is pretty standard and a completely rebuilt 1981 ex Mini 1000 now fitted with many upgrades and a 1275 engine. I have a couple of questions regarding each as I am not the best (probably the worst)! with electrics.

The garage I have is not great and is very humid at certain times of the year. I have had a long term leg injury and have therefore been unable to drive either Mini for 6 or 7 months. They both require the Bulgarian equivalent of an MOT.

I drove the 1994 car to the test and everything was fine until the actual test when the indicators which worked fine on the drive there  decided to give up. The hazards are working as normal. Reading up I am tempted to change the relay (DRC 8626 / GFU 2208) and the hazard switch (YUF 101660). Does my thinking make sense?  I am also aware that due to humidity it could be a bad earth in the system, where would I find this earth point?

With the 1981 Mini I am still trying to get ready for the test. I replaced the Rev Counter and that worked fine, but when I did all my tests of instruments etc. I have the opposite problem as my other car - the Indicators work but the hazards don't ! Also the Wipers and Washers do not now work - they were fine before. I am thinking an earthing problem but as above Ihave no idea where earths should be and maybe it's not that at all? I have checked all fuses and they look fine.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated,

Even better if anyone actually knows of someone or a garage in the Varna area that understands old school electrics?

Many thanks,

Will.

The 94 uses the same flasher (DRC8626) for indicators & hazards so if either work it is ok. The indicator relay  connects the flasher to the indicator stalk when the ignition is on. It would be a good place to start looking for the fault.

This FAQ has shows the relay location & has the wiring diagram

Remove the relay and check the green wire is live with the ignition on. You can do that with a voltmeter or test light connecting it to the black wire on the same relay holder.

Even if you can't manage that, bridging the light green/pink & light green/brown terminals will act like the relay is working and pass the current on to the indicator stalk. You can do the similar at the connector below the steering column, if that hasn't identified the relay as the fault. Bridging the light green/brown to the green/white or green/red (obviously on the car side of the connector) should cause one side or the other's indicators to flash.

The older Mini has separate indicator & flasher units. You could try bridging the terminals on the hazard flasher (near the wiper motor?) that will make the hazards light, but not flash, if it's the flasher.

Thanks Ethel,

Very helpful, re the 81 Mini I can't understand why the Wipers and washers as well as the hazards packed up at the same time.

Coincidence?

The hazards should be on a permanent live & the wipers ignition dependant. The hazard flasher doesn't have an earth, so it's not that.
