Briefly I have a 1967, aussie mk 1 Morris Cooper S 1275. Taken (not by me) from australia to california and then permanently imported into UK under form C & E 388 on05/09/1991, free of C & E charges. V. long period of rebuilding began and taken to spain as part of goods and chattels when owner moved. Owner died before completion of project which I took over and completed. Now wanting to return it to UK to register and sell. UK authorities being very obstructive and want payments etc. Never registered in spain or used here. Does anybody have any similar experience or advice to share?. I know this is a bit obscure but I live in hope.

If you are a member of the mini cooper register you could ask for help from their DVLA contact. Just a thought

Do you have any form of registration documents relating to this vehicle showing  engine / chassis numbers and date of first registration as these help when applying  for UK registration.

If you have none of the above then it is a challenge, you will need to get proof from an authority that the DVLA recognise regarding the integrity of the vehicle.

You will also need a current MOT pass certificate for the vehicle to prove it exists, is complete and roadworthy. 

Once you have documents proving these factors you can apply for an age related index number using the first time registered form V55/4.

The DVLA process can be tiresome.

MatthewsDad and weed. Is there anything that you are aware of that prevents me from trailering it back into the UK and then sorting paperwork

without being charged at Customs.

I imported my Mk1 from Portugal, once it was in the country I had a couple of forms to fill in, an inspector came round to confirm the car was what I said it was, then DVLA issued a V5 with an age related plate, if I remember right it cost around £80.00, no VAT or import duties to pay because of the age of the car. Pretty painless really, time span was around 2 months all in.

I think it's covered in some of the IVA info. You shouldn't need to jump through all the IVA hoops, but it covers vehicles that never had UK type approval so may explain why & what you don't need to do.

 

It looks like it'd help to be pre-armed with evidence of its age & value because you'll have 14 days to notify its arrival in the UK.
