I have acquired a Cooper S supplied with 2 x  10x 4.5 rims and 2 x 10 x 5.0 rims . Would one put 5¨ on front or rear?

Front for me. Shouldn't make a huge difference if they're wearing the same tyres.

...unless one pair has a silly offset.

I'd put the most "grippy" wheel tyre combination on the rears as understeer is easier to cope with than oversteer, so maybe the 5" on the rear.

Both points above have merit.

Me, I'd get the extra wheels required to have four the same. Your choice as to which.

That will allow you to rotate the tyres, in the way we did when your Mini was new.

If it is a genuine Cooper S (with the value they command) , I would put a matching set of matching wheels on it. 4.5 mean you don't need arches and both widths will take 165 / 70 10 anyway. Or if there are 2 you prefer try and get and match further 2 to make up a set.

Certainly worth thinking about, especially if & when you need to replace tyres.

About  £60 a corner for 4.5 "S" steel rims - less TMF+ discount

For me it depends where and what youndomwith your mini....

0-40 straight shoot out, like a drag strip, wide boys up front to get the rubber sticky and put power down to go go go

Where as...

Hillclimber or short tracks i would want wide boys on the back and give better cornering and chuckability..

For nipping to the shops and cosmetics and general i would go matchy matchy.....
