So yeah, I've decided not to sell her just because I'm disappointed with the A-series, I've decided to throw a load more money at her instead!

Good man!

I'm liking the sound of your engine plans too. What sort of weight difference is there between the 1.8 and the 2.0 lumps? Or are we talking none?

Also, about keeping the 10" wheels, why wouldn't you be able to anyway? :S

Matt, i may be wrong but i think someone had space issues when they tried to fit a bogg brothers manifold. That was with suzuki TBs, but it may be something t look into.

Yeah, it was a case of either sell up or make it quicker, smoother, more reliable and more economical! Didn't have the heart to sell her, so decided to go down this route instead.

I would have gone for the C20XE and that was in fact what I was looking for, but this seemed such a bargain and seems to have plenty of potential. Even in standard form it's supposed to be 128bhp on the Astra with a catalytic converter, so I reckon it'd be good enough without doing the mods. I just want to use a C18XE and take it past the 150bhp mark really!

Small update:

Stripped the engine of its ancillaries and mounts, started to measure up what I've got to make and also spoken to my composites man about a custom GRP round nose front end that's 'slightly' different to standard. ;D

Degreased the engine a little and have started to buy replacement parts for it (oil filter, timing belt etc) so it's ready for a bit of a service. The engine seems to be in OK condition, doesn't seem to have pushed too much oil out from the breathers or anything, but I'm going to get a head gasket set and take the head off, get it ported a little bit, then fit the new camshafts with the head on the bench.

I've also started to make up some of the brackets needed for the frame and for mounting the mini suspension on it. I've also got to make a jig to set up the suspension mount points for the bottom arms and tie-rods. :D

Was hoping to get a full day at it yesterday but ended up working 8-5. Rubbish!!!

Sligtly slight update.

I have been a measuring and head-scratching tonight.

If I've worked things out right, I reckon a 35-40mm wide radiator will allow the whole bundle to fit under a standard length round nose. At the moment I've taken a new subby, stripped it back to the towers, there is about aanother 50mm of metal to relieve around the driveshaft apertures and then I can start welding my frame work together

I've also bought these:
