i have a 2nd hand engine which im in the process of rebuilding for Sunshines mini.

the problem i have is that the diff was missing when i got it. now im going to be using the existing diff out of Sunshimes old engine. but will it be a case of just swapping everything over, or will it need shimming and how will i do this?

john, Dan can you help?

more info:- it is an automatic box

think its more to do with preload on the diff bearings than aliginment.

there is a reasonably description of how to do in haynes manual

You need 4 tho pre load on your diff bearings. Place diff in gearbox and push to the far right as poss then fit cover finger tight. use new gasket on the righthand side diff cover and bolt up to torque setting 18 lb f ft this will push diff over to the left tighten up diff case. place old shims on the output shaft and fit lefthand cover finger tight not to distort diff cover. Use feeler gauges to measure the gap beteen outside cover and diff case. you are looking for 11 tho gap . Take a few readings around the diff cover to get a average. The rover gasket crushes to 7 tho so 11 tho will give you 4 tho pre load. I use rtv sealant around the diff case when you are putting it together properley take your time to get this right large bolts on diff case are 25 lb f ft good luck.

about that, make sure the final drive ratio is the same in sunshines as the donor, or it wont work... but apart from that the diff fitting is the same as the manual ( it's in the FAQ on gearboxes on how to shim the diff with some nice piccies )
