i thort that having the reverse on the boot could be illegal(blind people), unless its linked to the reveres and not on a switch

No the reverse lamp isn't covered by the MOT but that doesn't mean it isn't covered by the law. The MOT DOES NOT CHECK THAT YOUR CAR IS ROAD LEGAL. Sorry to shout but it comes up time and again. The MOT only checks that your car is safe and working well, keeping it road legal is your own resposibility as the driver (note that it's up to the driver, not the registered keeper or owner). They are completely optional and that is why they are not tested but if one is fitted it must comply with the law. All cars used before April '86 are limited to a 24 watt reverse lamp but may use any lamp they like. All cars first used after April '86 must use an approved design lamp, with a BS kitemark or an E approval. Approved lamps are 21 watt maximum.

So technically, you can put an 'auxilary' lamp on the boot, wired to a toggle switch. And have no proper reverse light? :gimme:

It is of course illegal to display any white light to the rear of a vehicle, other than a reverse lamp complying with the above regulations or a work lamp on a recovery or road maintenance vehicle. Or something like that, can't quite remember but the regulations are very specific.
