I recently started to hear a knocking from the engine when changing gear.
after reading posts on similar problems had a look at the mountings.

the lower steady on the right hand side was a bit loose so i tightened that.
the steady under the radiator seemed fine.

then to my horror discovered that the upper steady, though still attatched to the engine, had ripped clean away from the torn bulkhead mounting. I lifted it back into place and the engine weight held it tightly in position (see photo). The engine had been easily rockable before and seemed tighter now.

I read that someone had welded the mount back together. It looks a little rusty so i wondered whether it would be better to replace it. Is this difficult and where is the best place to get the parts.

I don't anticipate repairing this will be the end of the problem from previous posts!

thankyou for any advice you may have.

As miniboo says you can buy that part,

replacement is a bit of a pain though espcialy for the non mechaicaly minded, you need to remove both the master cylinders (which means removing both the pedal clevis pins which is a PITA) also this means undoing the clutch and brake lines from the masters so they'll need bleeding afterwards.

Personaly i would look for a thick washer and get it welded onto the bracket.

Also what is the bracket just below this one like? has that pulled off?

if it has your easiest route may be to fit a steady on the other side of the engine, i particarly lik the look of the Avonbar one.

here is a pic on one fitted to my project.

the part below is broken too!

the job of welding a washer on sounds like the perfect christmas present for my dad!

I spent my teenage years looking on while he repaired my minis almost every weekend.

I had that bottom part break on me recently,

I cut a peice of thick steel angle, drilled a hole in it tacked a nut on the bottom, and welded it to the bulkhead.

It's holding up ok but its tricky to get in there to weld it on properly, mind you i was trying to TIG mine it may be easier with a MIG.

I'm going to take it to a local bodywork man I know tomorrow and show him the printouts of your advice and see which option he thinks is best.

my dad didn't seem to keen on spending christmas dad under a car!

thanks for your help
