hi all
i have a 1995 n reg mini spi and after two days the battery goes flat if i dont use it. i have cleaned all the connections fitted three new batterys and new alternator but its stil doing it . i have put an amp meter on the battery to see it theres is any amps being drawn from the battery when all is off but its very low .5 amp witch should not be a problem. when i bought the car it had a battery cut off switch in the boot and i found a letter in service book from the first owner to say that they had the same problem so had this switch fitted.
anyone with an spi had the same problem????????????

Not heard of that one before.

Does it have an alarm fitted? I have heard of a lot of problems with alarms draining the battery.

0.5 amps is quite a lot, thats like having your interior light left on all the time. That would be plenty enough to drain a Mini battery over a couple of days. I would start by checking things like the stereo first.

There must be an auxhilliary device draining the battery. I guess it could be caused by the alarm system, maybe in conjunction with something else? Over what period of time does the battery go flat?

Actually, yeah. What he said! :-

0.5 amps is gonna drain a 50Ah battery in 100 hours. Plus I assume that you tested it without the alarm turned on?

Are there any lights in glove boxes or anything daft that aren't turning themselves off?

you could go to the starter motor solenoid at the front of the engine, find the brown wires and disconnect these 1 at a time until the .5 amp drain goes

then try and find out what doesn't work to find your power drain :-

Oh yes the dredded .5 amp Does your car have the standard rover radio or a removable front one

Try putting your meter back on and disconect the radio and see what happens, if its not that, try removing each fuse and observe the meter.

Some radios with the removable front depending how they have been wired can pull the battery down as the amp circuit still remains running.

Just my 2ps worth

measure the drain on the battery directly, then remove different things 1 by 1 til the drain stops!! an alternator is capable of draining the battery, so is a radio or an ecu or a relay!! or a chaffed wire!!

M1M1 Man, did you manage to find out what was draining your battery? I've got exactly the same problem on a '93 cooper, am probably going to end up fitting a battery cut off switch as a temporary solution I think.
