If you are modifying the engine beyond a typical stage1 spec or just want a carb for ease of adjustment then syholl's suggestion of doing a straight swap for an mg metro engine would be a good idea. spi engines still fetch good money on ebay and you could probably pick up an mg engine for half of what the spi will sell for.

Because SPI engines are a heap of shi....
.......just misunderstood.
Could be due to unfounded rumors spread on forums.....
I think its more to the fact that most mini owners are used to carb's and fuel injection is much different. But as fuel injection systems go, its one of the simpler ones.

Minis were designed to use carbs. There isn't enought room in the minis engine bay to fit an injection system practicaly.
The mini would have died back in the 90's if it wasn't for the adaptation of fuel injection for the A-series. Obviously it wasn't designed for it, but it was better that the mini continue production, albeit with a new fuel system than die out there and then. They wern't designed to use turbo chargers, or even to be used as racing cars but they did anyway.
I agree with you the fuel injection system is somewhat cramped, but there are definately worst vehicles to work on. You might say there isn't enough room to seat four people in a mini practically but that doesn't stop people. I've had five in mine + baggage. lol.
