well a stage 1 kit is really just an exhaust and a few other bits. needles, air filter so you've got half that already.

If it's cost that's messing with you then ebay is your friend. I got my cooper freeflow manifold for £2.50 off there. Works lovely, rings a little but still good.

Magic pipe is good if you want to be cheap and have the better look for now, don't know about the performance aspects of it tho.

.......little trick to get some engine noise tho is the old holes in the air box trick. Give a nice growl to the engine from were you'd be. Don't know about outside the car.

Okay, well I am now really confused lol I am phoning minispares/sports tommorrow to order my bits...I just dont know what!!! Okay so I am going to use my exhaust, and not the magic pipe route, so what do I need an AAA or AAU needle? And what other bits?! Please could you put links to em?

thanks
karl

hmm....can you give a link to were you got this sportex back box. Just looked on their site and they only have one for a NEW mini. not a proper mini.

Atcualy can you give a picture with all the bits that came with it. If its a center exhaust it should (I think) come with a bracket to hold it to the bottom of the rear subframe. Like a bit flat U shaped thing.

edit,

d'oh, it's on your 1st post.

Right, got the back box and the center pipe. No need to worries about them.

Fitting parts;

one of these.

and one of these unless you replaced them recently.

Exhaust manifold

NOTE!!!!! Not sure about this, 2 reasons. 1, the link pipe on your one doesn't look too long so it might not reach and 2) a LCB isn't the best thing for your little 998 engine. But because you got a large bore exhaust you might have to suffer.
Can someone confirm this?

U-Bolts and exhaust assembly putty.
Go down to your local motor shop with the back box and link pipe and ask for some U-bolts for it. Need 3 in total. 1 for holding the exhaust to the rear of the subframe. 1 to connect the link pipe to the manifold and one to connect the back box to the link pipe.....make that 4 actually. as you might need another to hold the exhaust to the centre rear exhaust mount (rear subframe but at the front end of it). I used a jubilee clip there just to hold the exhaust to the mounting.

Needle,
AAU needle be fine.

edit again

OH and an airfilter.

I am now at the point of swearing and pulling my hair out, if I knew changing the exhaust would bring so many issues I'd of told my brother where to stick the exhaust! lol :'(

Phoned mini spares and explained about the problem..still a bit confused. I hate technical lingo I do not know! lol I need to go measure and see the engine for myself now to see what I have got to order etc

Back soon Karl!

Right, Ive phoned mini spares to ask about their magic pipe size, the inside diameter is 1 and 3 quarter inches. My outside diameter of my centre pipe is 1.69" no good ya think?!?

All they said was either phone the people I got the exhaust from, Minisports. Or change to an RC40 but the latter is not an option as my mum said I am not selling the present/exhaust.

Please help :gimme:(

Get the sportex LCB from minisport (it will fit with what you have already as we put a similar one on a mates car) and all the other bits from minispares (as you get a discount).

Your going to see a performance increase from all those bits anyway compared to whats on it at the moment, dont worry too much about the bore and lcb. it does make a difference but its not massive.

The sportex large bore exhausts with the lcb do sound pretty good though :gimme:

I also recommend you get a couple of manifold to head studs and nuts in case you mash any of them up when getting them off, for a couple of quid its worth not having to wait around to receive them after the event so to speak !

ok this is my calm soothing voice i hope.

im sorry if i opened a tin of worms by mentioning manifolds, etc. keeping a mini standard is the least hassle way to run it. usually there is a chain of things where by u change 1 and it upsets a few other bits, none of which are usually too massive but as you have found they do add up.

the simplest option for you is the magic pipe as its pretty much plug and play, tho changing the exhaust system will slightly change the fuelling requirnents of the engine as there are no computer systems to automatically adapt to the modification. sure the engine will stil run ok tho it wont be noticably faster tho, sometimes slower.
as for how it will run with the exhaust, i cannot promise anything!! if you are unsure what to do then fit the magic and exhaust and see if it feels like its holding back at all or if there are any flat spots on the acceleration after the mods.

fitting a stage 1 kit is a fair amount of changes to do for a novice but its not impossible. it will improve performance but the fuelling requirments WILL change enough to upset the running of the car. even fitting the needles that have been suggested are only a best guess. tho usually are good enuf that the car runs better than it did.

the best way to set the engine up after any modifications is to have it setup on a rolling road. (maybe not necesary for the magic pipe) this isnt too cheap looking at £50 - £100 approximately depending on where you take it (dont quote me) but they setup the fuelling and ignition timing to make sure all is ok, it gives you a nice BHP reading too.

does this help??

as for what parts are available i think this covered above. what you need depends on what you already have im afraid. buying from the same place and getting all the bits at once helps but so does understanding what you are ordering. this im afraid only comes with experience. there are lots of books out there to help you with this. not all are relevant to minis but lots are. mite help you to have a look thru whats available at the mini supplies shops that are about.

There is a magic pipe for sale here which won't cost you an arm and a leg. You wanted a new exhaust and this will give it to you for probably the least amount of money and hassle. Sure you prob won't get a power increase, but there isn't much to lose either and this can be used into the future with more mods or better still a large bore engine which it was designed for....good luck getting it all set up!
