serviced the woman the other day (yes, the mini) and number 1 and 4 plugs are a good colour, but number 2 and 3 are black.
why????? ive got a single hs4 on it. i do have a leak in the centre branch of my lcb at the cylinder head though
interesting...

Im taking a stab in the dark here that they are sooty black as running rich due to not getting enough air due to the leaky inlet?

See if you can do a compression test on each cylinder. Is the engine running ok at the moment? Is the exhaust black?

2 & 3 always run a little richer due to the design of the head iirc. When you say black, are they caked in soot or just a little darker ?

i actually completely forgot i posted this thread up. but anyway.
i believe the mix is ok, otherwise the other plugs would be black too.
exhaust smoke isnt black.
engine runs fine, dont have the facilities for a compression test. but its running good considering my tuning abilities.
plugs are all gapped correctly, and they were a sooty black. no oil. so not the piston rings i hope.
im guessing it would be the exhaust manifold leak then?
ordering lots of bits tonight so when i get time i can get it all sorted out and stop it leaking.
cheers

Is your engine idle stable?
If you had a manifold leak it would bounce around a bit.
I suspect your engine is fine and the black pugs are more a result of your last journey in the mini being quite short or with the choke out?

And because those two cylinders always run richer than the outer two, as I already said.
If you dont clean your plugs regularly then you will notice it more than someone who does. Mine are perfect coloured on the outer two cylinders but the inner two are always darker, if I leave them for ages then they go sooty
It was set up on Slarkes RR as well so the mixture is right

well the idle is stable most of the time, until it gets cold then its horrible.
i know theres a leak. well smoke poured out of it before, then i bodged it, but it still chokes me if i put my head under the bonnet, and theres still soot being deposited on things.
so im just filing down one side of my inlet and cleaning it all up and putting a new gasket on so it all fits flush.
then on goes the vizarded hif38 and im off to mr baldwin.
EDIT:
seeing as i dont want to start another topic, i have an lcb with a C**p minisport superflow exhaust. or whatever its called.
i want an rc40 single box.
should i get it rr'd, then bung on the exhaust when i can or will that take it much out of tune?
or should i put on the new exhaust then get it rr'd, just i dont have money once ive sorted everything else out and want it rr'd soon as poss.
plus i just heard the lcb is C**p for a 998 in anything but high tune. should i get a cooper freelow?
or will either of these not make much difference.
cheers
