Everything has been fine with my mini but then about 3 days ago i was going dont the motorway and when i went over 4k revs it started to sort of choke, i dont know the technical term ( the revs started to cut ot the go back, then cut off and go back up,etc) but then when i went back down below 4k revs everything was back to normal.

I also tried this in 3rd gear and the same thing happened.

so i was woundering what is wront? Is the timing out or something?

I had something similar recently. I thought it was fuel and fitted a filter - but no. I am now pretty sure it was electrical as the wire returning from the coil to tacho (I dont have a tacho) was shorting somewhere. That is now removed and that problem has gone away.

Usually a sign something is amiss in the ignition system, check the points gap and replace any bits that are past their sell by date :w00t:

Was it raining when this happened ?

Oh i think i know what is wrong with your mini as i had the same problem with my old mini. I changed the points and that fixed that! but this seems different it seems like the engine is missing something :w00t:

if it's a 91 cooper, it could be the ignition module on the side of the distributor but you usually get starting problems with this as well, check it out though because once it gives up completely it just fails all of a sudden !!!!

Nope its not that, it starts and drives fine but then when it hits about 4000 revs its starts to kind of choke itself.

When were the Spark Plugs, HT Leads, Dizzy Cap & Rotor Arm last changed?

And when did it last get an oil change and air filter change (full service in fact) too?

could nee the need le sorting if you have fitted engine mods and not had it rolling roaded? i bet if you were to pull the choke out and give it a bit of extra fuel it will be fine.

the full service was done only about a month ago and so that should be ok. Ill take it to a get checked out soon. Ill try running it with the choke out and see how it goes, if that fixes the problem ill adjust the mixture a bit and see if that fixes it.

If it's a carb model, do you put oil in the dashpot?

I agree a good rolling road tune would help, but my Minis got an LCB & Maniflow exhaust system, K&N cone filter & slightly richer needle but i've yet to get it set up on the rollers.

Till now i've just had it crypton tuned by a mobile tuner who does a grand job, so try getting it tuned and see if that helps?

Could be the coil.

Its unlikely to be the mixture if it was running fine before and now isnt. As said above check the ignition system is in good order.

As dan said, it could be the coil. When it starts to break down it will cause misfires at higher revs and under load. It could also be the condensor which would have the same effect.

There is a method for testing the coil shown in the haynes manual. The condensor you cant really check (although there is a sort of method in haynes) and its a PITA with new ones as it seems like a lucky dip as to whether they will work or not !

An electronic ignition module would solve it, costs more but you never have to worry about points/condensor again :D

until the electronic module goes wrong. yes it has happened to a fair few folks i know. 1 day it just decides to pack up. not that im saying it isnt a good idea but carrying a spare points and condensor is a good idea incase the leci ignition goes BANG.
