as a general rule but im pretty sure V said that after 6 inches or so (cant remember exact number), it makes no difference, its just the short ones which produce not as good results.
Thats funny, its what my girlfriend said about something else too

If you get the bigger ones you'll need a box to put it in!

i believe ideal length was 11 inches but its not practical in a mini so 6 inches is good

my airbox is about as big as u can go without going past the original dash lines, i have 6" manifold and a 60mm filter with 40mm ram pipes and its got 1cm behind the air filter before it gets the back of the box!! i gues you could use shorter ram pipes and filter but how much restriction would u get??
iremember reading in the vizard bible if the manifold is too short the air pressure waves can blow fuel back out of the carb rather than into it so at low revs you'd actually run lean!!

7 INCHES PUTS THE AIR FILTER AT THE OTHER SIDE OF A STANDARD DASH!!
My uncle had a webber that came into the cabin, moved the clocks to accomodate it.
he reckons if it back fired on the overrun, and it werent set right, you could easily get flames scorching your elbows!!!!
