it does? seems like a weird way to do it.
It's the only way to do it. Hazard switches are always pretty complex unless the system is controlled by a body ECU. When you press the switch it has to connect both sides of the indicator circuit together which obviously can't be connected together normally. It also has to change over the power to the flasher unit from ignition only to constant (or activate a second flasher unit on earlier systems) and connect in the dash repeater, all at the same time.

Would have replied sooner but this is the first time I've been able to get on.
Another thing, my hazards only work with the ignition on. It's not supposed to be like that is it but it must have passed its MOT like that last year.

Circuit 1 - Hazards
Battery > Line fuse > Hazard Flasher > Hazard Switch > Lamps (L&R)
Circuit 2 - Indicators
Battery > Fuse Box > Indicator Flasher > Hazard Switch > Indicator Switch > Selected L or R Lamps
