I'm a tit :- I got about a hours advice from the lady at the local body panel shop and now i'm at it. I'm spray canning my mini jet black. I've just finished the first coat on my driver door panel, I'm doing it inside a garage so most of natures problems are our of the way but ive still got a bit of a draft.

It's already started to drip a little in some places, beginners luck i guess :genius: I can always sand this down and respray for the next coat.

I'm hoping to do a few coats today and see how it goes.

Oh and feel free to hurl abuse at how stupid i'm being :w00t:

It will be black, she's currently white :-

I'll have to change the name, Casper doesn't suit anymore!

Bit of a masculine name for such a beautiful girl anyway.

Well i mentioned roller painting to the lady at the motor panel shop and she didn't know what it was... i probably didn't explain properly to her seeing as im not entirely sure what it is :-.

But we added up that it'd cost about 40 squids for all the paint.

heat each panel up with a hair dryer, so they are warm to the touch, that will help to stop the paint runs!

Wow, sounds like a good idea lol!

I don't have any sockets in my garage tho :- I'll have to stick with sanding it down.

First coat looks bloody amazing tho, no patches or white coming through and only a few bits of running paint.

I was told to do about 3 coats, think that sounds about enough?

I would spray two coats, then flat it back, then do another two coats, flat it back and polish it up. so yeah that would equal about 3 coats in the end..

To stop it dripping don't put thick coats on. Lots of thin coats will make the paint rock hard, which is what you want.

yes have the door warmed up a touch... but keep the paint indoors too, otherwise you'll be spraying cold paint on a warm door, which can cause adhesion problems.

Rattle cans are good if you take the time on them. Looks like me and chicky will have to start a DIY paint job club lol.

*edit, i wouldn't spray more than two coats a day, the layers need to harden nicely before you cover them up, a hot hair dryer on a low speed setting can aid this considerably

thanks for the insight retro!

Looking out my bedroom window it seems i've hit a problem...

its pouring down!!!!!!!!!

ive got the mini garaged but like i said its still kinda open to the weathers as one side doesn't have a door, this is a major setback on my plans. Moisture isnt a good thing when your spraying... right?

Also how long should i leave each coat, the can says 20-30 minutes but surely that cant be long enough?

spraying when damp will make the paint bloom (go milky) :-

the other benefit is ... that after shaking all those cans ... you will have olympic sized wrists .... could come in handy I suppose!!!!

and can I ask what you are doing in your bedroom????

upon reflection .. I don't want to know!!!

Seriously, take your time those rattle cans without heat will take up to three days before you are in a position to flatten it down

In the meantime .. enjoy!

Most spray cans just quote a touch dry time, not a fully cured and hardened time. Regardless of the time quoted... i would leave two coats to dry overnight.

Moisture isn't good, but as long as the mini is dry and there's not damp in the air you'll be ok. If you're garage only has one side then you might come across problems with the paint setting fully for example... it wont because of the Damp and cold. you need to get a sheet of plastic or something and cover up the other side of the garage to stop breeze and extreme cold or you'll have to start again unless you're very lucky mate :-

**edit 'webweavers' has beat me to it but as he said with an open ended garage the paint is gonna take ages to harden.**

wish i'd read those last two replies before my last move.

The finish looked really nice before i decided to sand it down and add another coat :- What a tit.

I guess i'll leave this one to harden overnight then, its not looking all that great at the moment :w00t:

and my computer is in my room, end of.

Don't worry mate... use wet and dry like an eraser! you'll be fine. trail and error is the best way to learn.

perhaps have a read through of the 'how to paint your car' thread at the top of the painting section main page. It has some very useful knoweledge and tips in there.

How have you prepped the car and how have you degreased it before painting?
