If I had £20k at the moment, I'd mid mount a Volvo 2.3 T5 engine longitudinaly in an estate /woody Mini. Hook the driveshafts up to a pair of diffs front and rear to give me four wheel drive. Once thats done, I'd spend the rest of the cash (about £15k) tuning the engine in to a 6-700bhp turbo'd monster (I WILL be doing it one day!).
Hopefully it would sound, go and drive like the car in the link below.....which will always be my ultimate car.

Can't beat the sound of a turbo'd 5 cylinder, reving to 8500rpm at 20+psi in my oppinion :D

I hear what people are saying about the golf , but i do really want to stick with a mini. Ive had 3 in the past and loved everyone of em. I only sold due to me working a long distance and was sick of having bells ringing in my ears when i pulled up , lol

I am going to stick with a mini and bring it into the 21st century , both mechanically and electrically.

IF I had to build a '20K' mini, it'd deffo be a carbon fibre sprint shell, A+ engine, destroked and overbored, KAD 16V head, throttle bodies, mappable ignition, 10" split rim alloys, alloy brakes, coilovers all round, stripped out interior.................

Light as you like and pushing out around 150bhp, revvy as hell and still on 10" wheels! That's what minis are all about! :D

Yeah i think minimadme's got the right idea, putting bike engines ect in minis is all fun, and fast, but its bringing it further and further away from being a mini!

And its still gunna be fast at end of the day!

Just my 2p worth,
If you are looking at a bike engine conversion as a daily runner, I would forget it and go for the vtec.
The reason being all the sound proofing,pc and bling is going to add quite some weight. A bike engine has not got the torque compared to a vtec for pulling all that weight. I chose bike engines in my projects because of my love of bikes and minis.
Bike powered cars in my opinion are toys (serious toys). And the pc thing :'( I think you would be too busy changing gears with 6 close ratio gears. Its hard work believe me.

Bike power = all out light weight racer.

Vtec power = comfortable, quiet, less gear changes, not chain to adjust and a bigger alternator to power the pc.

For £20k, it would have to be an all steel turbo'd 1380 8 port on throttle bodies with megasquirt :D :)

As has been said, its all fun going down the Vtec/Bike conversion route but its not an A Series which is what having a mini is all about :o If you want a bike engined car get a westfield (but not for that money !) and if you want a vtec get an integra type r :)

My 2p !

Building the ultimate mini isn't too hard.

You just build any old ratty mini...

Then you ask everyone NOT to build a mini after you've finished.

:D

Yeah,

I think i am going to go the car engine route instead of a motorbike engine.

I really dont want it to be a workout everytime i go for a drive (which will be daily)

Anyone ever done a fiat uno turbo engine'd mini?

If not , how would i find out the actual size of an engine(to make sure it would fit?

And finally , would you go rwd or fwd ?

Which will give the best outright handling?

In a recent mini world there was a twin vtec engined mini with turbos and Nos with over 1000bhp. Some crazy apint work and mad install. Would you call this untimate?

Different people have different definitions of 'ultimate' I guess.

I'd certainly say that the feature car you're on about wasn't my ultimate mini, but it must be someones idea of ultimate! :D

My 2p,

If you want to go very fast in a Mini and retain its original engine, don't expect a relaxed ride. You might aswell call it a mobile gym. I don't regard what Im doing to my car to be the ultimate "Mini" as its now not A seires powered. Only reason Ive changed my mind is because I can't yet afford my "ultimate A seires".
A KAD 16V, turbo'd 970s with the new type of sequential box and a Quaife ATB diff is my ultimate but just check out how much that little lot would cost.

Anyone remember the red 1460 minus on the first Ultimate Mini DVD and on a Mini World front cover? Well that car cost over £30K. If your gunna build something that is as fast and sexy as that car, PLUS a tricked up interior with a PC, TV and loads of ICE etc, that would easily exceed 35 maybe 40 grand.

As far as "Bang for Buck" is concerned, I reckon mine is right up there. HOWEVER, if I was trying to build a really fast, effortless to drive Mini with a big plush interior and ICE it wouldn't. I wouldn't even consider a high reving Vtec to be.

For a start, the engine MUST be fitted in the back. As super and brilliant as they are Vtec, XE, R1 and K seires FWD conversions are just crazy to drive and need a fair bit of respect and second thinking to drive them fast. Wheels spinning in 3rd and 4th might impress your mates, but do you really want to do that when up against the local chave or exiting that all important apex at that track day? Id fit a low reving, high torque, high power motor such as a 2.5-3liter V6, 2 liter XE or even a modern deisel. Just something that wouldn't suprising you when booting it.
