do boots get trimmed to suit the hole in the back end? its just we have a replacement boot but it doesnt fit properly on the corners.

The boot lid? the boot floor?...
boot lids non original to your mini will require fiddling with the hinge holes etc to get them to sit right.

Also depends on the seals.
Older ones had a seal bonded to the inner boot lid.
Later ones had a "Push on" Seal which sat on the lip around the "Hole in the back of the car".
I think the boot lids are interchangable. Just need to get the right seal.
Obviously it wont shut with both seals fitted.
