hey guys
ive just invested in a new sterio, and ive got a set of 6x9's for the back
the problem is, i dont know where to put them
the obvious place is to stick them in the parcel shelf, by cutting a big hole in each side
but this has its down sides
if i ever remove the speakers, ill be left with a great big hole in the shelf, does this weaken anything in particular? or is it not really a problem
for those who have cut them into the shelf, what did u use to cut them? ive been told ill need a body saw  is it not possibly to use a jig saw? maybe evne from inside the boot with the tank out, or just drill a hole and use a hacksaw blade from inside the car?
the other issue is theft
i know if theyre bolted to the metal shelve its going to be hard to nick them, but are oportunist theives likely to smash the window to see if tehy can get them?
this worries me as the car isnt parked in the nicest of areas while im at college, just last week my mates metro was broken into and his cheapy 6x9's were taken, along with the parcel shelf tehy were screwd onto....
the other option is to mount them under the rear seats, using the custom consoles 6x9 board thingy, but i often put my trainers in that space while im at work, so thats a problem, i was also not sure about sound quality with them being down there.
so
basicly
where do you guys mount your 6x9 speakers, and where has been most effective???
cheers
nick

got mine in the shelf. we used a dremel and about 50 discs to cut it.

I have a piece of material foam stuff with black vinyl across so it looks tidy, i cut a hole in the piece and dropped the speaker in. bolted it to shelf.

They could smash your window, but with them been bolted thru the metal it will take them some time to get them out.

I dont worry about the speakers, its the headunit i worry about. U could mount them in footwells, the rear bins or underseat and ofc the parcel shelf.

Rear parcell shelf, used a drill and tin snips. Oh yes, I said tin snips!

Ive covered mine over with carpet so you can even see them.

Nice and safe!

If you have seperate front speaker, like you said, then stick the 6×9s under the back seat and have the other ones in the dash, or your doors. That way, you don't have to worry aobut the treble being muffled by the seats, as the 6×9s will only be needed for mid/bass.

people tend to mount them in the under back seat position. i do not favour this position as it muffles much of the sound coming from them, as they fire into the rear of your seat. if mounted with some decent smaller component speakers in the front then this can be over come, but if 6x9's is all u got then i would consider mounting them in the rear parcel shelf as the rear window reflects the sound forward and its much crisper.

Yeah I put mine in the parcel shelf. I used a jigsaw to cut the holes and I needed about 3 blades after bending them trying to get near the window!! They sound great and I mounted them to a piece of wood that is mounted to the parcel shelf and the speakers are also mounted to the parcel shelf. I will eventually cover it in black carpet but it sounds good and looks cool. Didn't take long to do as the parcel shelf had already been marked for 6x6's by the last owner.

Yeah I was going to put them there but then I thought people might kick them with their heels so I stuck them in theparcel shelf.

the best place to stick em is in the parcel shelf, use a jigsaw with metal a blade to cut the holes. Then mount the speakers on a piece of 1/2 inch mdf covered in carpet. Use some sealant to seal the underside of the mdf to the rear shelf and screw it securely from underneath. This way you will reduce any rattles and get a good seal and therefor a better sound. The underseat speaker boards are only really a compromise and are less than ideal because you're ears aren't up you're arse so the imaging is all wrong. However they are easier to fit so its down to how confident you are at hacking holes in you're min.

My mate had a very good idea, to put them in the rear pockets, into some sort of fabricated mount, so it faces towards the front, top of the car. But i didn't know how to do it??? how would i go about doing it?? fibreglass?

hmm i would get the dimensions of the pockets (width and length) and just by trial and error with a cheap bit of MDF or summuts, something nice and substantial so it doesnt flap about everywhere.

Yea, and some patience lol!!

Would the pocket give enuff airspace for the 6 x 9 to work right, or doesn't it matter so much with them?

I was gunna have a go, but the capping over the pocket is a night mare to remove on mine, you have to remove part of the seatbelt, drill the rivets out. It would probably be worth it tho, as the sound quality would be 10 times better than the underseat boards.

i had some under my seat and some in my parcel shelf, the ones in the shelf sounded alot beter, and they were exactly the same speakers. dont cut a hole in the shelf tho. make 2 mdf spacing rings. its what i done. get piece of 1" mdf and you cut it using a 6x9 template and a jigsaw. cut out the middle so then you can sit the speaker in it, then leave a 25mm larger ring round the out side (so it is larger) and cut this out. just the magnet sits in the existing hole and the rest is raised up. then put a long screw through the spacers into the shelf and screw the speakers to the spaces.what iv done now is place a piece of bord on top of the spacers, between the spacers and speakers, so now it looks smart!
i can get a pic of how it looks now if you like?!?!
i have a picture of befor here:
